3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think my magazine would be distributed via the internet because it is quite specialist so shops wouldn’t want to stock it as they would not sell them all. Also because it can be issued at various points throughout the year people can order a subscription and have it delivered to them specially. People who want to read the magazine would know where to get it from because they would mix with other musicians who would be interested in it.

 4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

My audience would be classical musicians who want to know more about their idols and what they are doing as well as events they can take part in. I don’t feel there is a particular age limit as classical music can be enjoyed by people of all ages however this particular issue would probably be targeted more at younger musicians of the ages 16- 25 because it talks about a younger musician and her success.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience by using a colour and font that is not identified with a particular gender or age range. I also chose to have a variety of stories on the front cover that would attract a range of people.

 6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt that it is easiest to edit pictures in Photoshop and then add them into publisher to insert the text and work on the page layout.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task [the school magazine], what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel I have learnt more about the mise-en-scene of a magazine and the effect it can have on an audience. I also learnt that it is important to continue a theme throughout the magazine by using the same colour scheme and fonts throughout.

Most of these questions have been answered in the feedback video from Hana and Laura, however I am going to ask someone else these questions to get more of an idea about what they think of it.

Free magazines handed out at venues: Allow everyone to have access to the magazine however they may not be interested in a specific genre of magazine so handing out a music magazine for free might not work.

Subscription only magazines:  Allow people who are interested in a specific genre to be able to read a magazine regularly without having to remember to buy it. However there would not always be stories that they are interested in.

Other modes of distribution: Allowing people to choose the magazine at a shop gives them a wider choice but means they can look at the cover stories first to decide if there is something of interest to them within the magazine.

I feel that my magazine would be most effective if sold through subscription and also in shops. The audience for my magazine will know about my magazine through word of mouth. They are likely to mix with other, like-minded, musicians who would also read the magazine. It is through this that they would come to know about my magazine. Having them available in shops makes it possible for other people to find the magazine. If a subscription form is included in each issue then people who come across the magazine by chance can sign up for a subscription. Using a subscription to distribute the magazine means that readers have the magazine to read each month (or whenever they are issued) and they have been paid for up front so the magazine makes more money. It provides a regular income for the magazine reducing the risk of the magazine being unable to continue publishing.

A brief history of the publisher: Started as Commarket Press in the 1950′s  by Clive Labovitch and Michael Hesltine. The partner’s split in 1965 and Hestline kept his part of the business and naming it Haymarket Press. Due to its growing presence in online media and live events, it was re-branded as Haymarket Media Group in 2007.

Other magazines published by the business: Autocar, Autosport, Champions, Classic & Sports Car, F1 Racing, FourFourTwo, Gramophone, Inside United, Management Today, Stuff, The Gramophone Classical Music Guide 2010, What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision.

This shows that Haymarket Media Group specialise in publishing car magazines but still publish a small amount of music magazines. All of the magazines they publish are on specialist topics and can be subscribed to.

Here are 2 covers for music magazines I looked at. Both use a large picture of a model as the background with a large title at the top of the page to allow the reader to identify it quickly. They both incorporate other, smaller, pictures to illustrate other stories. The main story of the magazine is made obvious by using a larger font to make it stand out from the other stories. Q magazine uses a banner across the bottom of the page to highlight the feature story of the magazine, this uses a different colour scheme from the rest of the cover and I would guess that this is the colour scheme used specifically for this piece throughout the rest of the magazine.
